Lamps in Series Kit

Product Code : SCL-EAE-11195

The Lamps in Series Kit by Lab Exports is a rugged, self-contained educational tool engineered to withstand heavy, daily classroom use. Mounted on a durable, non-conductive polymer base board, the apparatus features three high-quality Miniature Edison Screw (MES) bulb holders pre-wired in a serial configuration. Clear, high-contrast circuit diagrams are silk-screened directly onto the panel, allowing students to map the flow of electric current as it moves from one component to the next.

To deepen the learning experience, this physics training model integrates a high-precision analog voltmeter and ammeter directly onto the testing deck. By physically measuring electrical values at different test points, students can observe how total resistance increases with each added bulb, resulting in a corresponding decrease in current flow and individual lamp brightness. This hands-on interaction makes abstract physics formulas intuitive and memorable for students of all learning levels.

Key Features

3-Bulb Capacity: Outfitted with three heavy-duty MES lamp holders arranged in a strict series configuration.

Applications / Uses

Demonstrating the concept of voltage drop across successive resistive loads in physics classrooms.

Proving Ohm's Law and the principles of equivalent series resistance ($R_{total} = R_1 + R_2 + R_3$).

Illustrating circuit interruption by showing how removing one bulb breaks the circuit loop and turns off all lamps.

Providing hands-on practice for students learning to use analog voltmeters and ammeters.

How to Use the Lamps in Series Kit

Place the series board assembly on a level laboratory workspace.

Screw the three provided low-voltage MES light bulbs firmly into their respective sockets.

Connect a 3V to 6V DC power source (such as two to four AA batteries) to the input terminals, matching the positive and negative poles.

Turn on the circuit. Observe that all three bulbs light up, but glow dimmer than they would individually due to the shared voltage.

Using the integrated voltmeter, measure the voltage drop across each individual bulb socket, then measure the total voltage. Verify that the sum of the individual voltage drops equals the total source voltage.

Unscrew one of the light bulbs from its socket. Note that the remaining two bulbs immediately turn off, demonstrating an open circuit.

Safety Note: Never exceed the maximum rated voltage of 6V DC. Applying excessive voltage will burn out the delicate bulb filaments and may cause permanent damage to the analog meter coils.

Care & Maintenance

Store the kit in a clean, dust-free environment out of direct sunlight to prevent the plastic base from degrading.

Always remove dry-cell batteries from the battery holders before storing the kit to prevent corrosive battery leaks.

Wipe the surface of the board and the meter faces with a dry microfiber cloth; do not use abrasive pads or chemical solvents.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Lamps in Series Kit used for?

It is used to teach students the properties of series circuits, showing how current remains constant while voltage divides across multiple sequential electrical loads.

What happens if one bulb is unscrewed or burns out in the kit?

Because a series circuit has only one continuous path for the electrical current to flow, removing or breaking one bulb opens the circuit and turns off all the other lamps instantly.

Is this kit safe for primary school children?

Yes, the kit is exceptionally safe. It runs on a low-voltage DC source (under 6V), making it perfect for safe, shock-free introductory science lessons in elementary and middle schools.

Can I connect an external bench power supply to this kit?

Yes, you can connect an external laboratory DC power supply to the terminals, provided you limit the voltage setting to a maximum of 6V DC.

What material is the circuit baseboard made of?

The baseboard is molded from high-impact, non-conductive polymer and Bakelite to ensure maximum electrical insulation and physical durability.
