Where each type of centrifuge is used

Clinical and pathology laboratories use low and medium speed centrifuges to separate serum and plasma from blood samples. The Centrifuge (EL-C-10705) and Clinical Centrifuge (EL-C-10701) are listed for pathology laboratories, small hospitals, schools and colleges, and the Hematocrit Centrifuge spins blood in capillary tubes for packed cell volume testing.

Molecular and cell biology work needs higher speeds and small tubes. The high-speed, micro and mini centrifuges take 0.2 to 2 ml tubes and PCR strips for DNA extraction, quick spin-downs and specimen preparation. For teaching demonstrations, or where power is unreliable, the Hand Centrifuge separates samples in 15 ml glass tubes by hand.

What is the difference between rpm and x g?

Rpm is how fast the rotor turns; x g (relative centrifugal force) is the force the sample feels, which also depends on the rotor radius. That is why the product pages give both, for example 15,000 rpm and 21,380 x g for the high-speed model.

Which centrifuge is used for haematocrit tests?

The Hematocrit Centrifuge (EL-C-10699) has a micro haematocrit rotor for 24 capillary tubes of 75 x 1 mm, a preset speed range of 2000 to 13,000 rpm and a 0 to 15 minute digital timer.

Can a centrifuge be used without electricity?

The Hand Centrifuge (EL-C-10697) is bench mounted with a removable crank handle and aluminium buckets for 15 ml glass tubes, so it works without a power supply.
