How the injection products are used

The disposable syringes are used in hospitals and clinics to inject fluids into, or withdraw fluids from, the body. The 1 ml size, with 0.05 ml scale intervals, suits small, precise doses; the 20 ml size suits larger volumes. Hypodermic needles are chosen by gauge: the 21G for standard injections and blood draws, the finer 23G where a smaller needle is wanted, and the 19G for injecting or withdrawing fluids below the skin.

Blood lancets are used for capillary sampling, such as glucose testing and other point-of-care tests. The standard infusion giving set delivers IV fluids by gravity, and the burette version allows a measured volume of fluid or medicine to be given, with an automatic valve that stops the infusion at the preset volume and keeps air out of the line.

The 5 ml syringe (EL-I-10881) is made of medical-grade plastic (PE, PP or PS) with a barrel clear enough to read volume and see air bubbles, graduation at 0.2 or 0.5 ml intervals and a centrally placed Luer lock or Luer slip nozzle. The burette giving set (EL-I-10882) has kink-resistant transparent PVC tubing, a perforator with a 15 micron filter and a bacteriological air filter, and a polystyrene burette chamber graduated every millilitre.

Which needle gauges are listed?

Separate needles come in 19G, 21G (0.8 x 40 mm) and 23G (0.6 x 25 mm). The 10 ml syringe is also offered with a 21G needle packed alongside it.

How are the needles and lancets sterilised?

The 21G needle page lists ethylene oxide sterilisation, and the lancet page lists ethylene oxide or gamma radiation with individual packing. Other items state their use and sterility status in their own specification tables.

How do the two giving sets differ?

The standard set has a calibrated drip chamber at 20 drops per ml and a roller clamp for rate control. The burette set drips at 60 drops per ml through a graduated chamber and adds an automatic shut-off valve for volume-limited infusions.
