How the optics apparatus are used
Glass and acrylic prisms show refraction and the splitting of white light into a spectrum. On the spectrometer, a glass prism gives the angle of minimum deviation and the refractive index, the hollow prism holds a liquid for the same measurement, and the calcite or quartz prism, cut with its optical axis parallel to the refracting edge, is used for refractive index measurements on a crystal. The lens set and optical benches are used to find the focal lengths of lenses and mirrors, and the ray kits trace incident, reflected and refracted rays.
The Newton's ring apparatus produces the interference rings used to find the wavelength of light or the radius of curvature of a lens. Mounted Polaroid discs show the variable transmission of polarised light and reveal stress patterns in plastics and glass. Hand lenses, loupes and the tripod magnifier serve close observation work, and the plastic mirror supports mirror writing and periscope activities.
