How it is used in EMF experiments
A Daniell cell, zinc in zinc sulphate and copper in copper sulphate separated by a porous pot, gives an EMF of about 1.1 V and has long been used as a steady comparison source in school physics. Setting one up, however, means handling solutions, cleaning electrodes and waiting for the cell to settle before each practical.
The substitute provides a nominal 1.08 V from a ready-to-use unit, so it can be connected straight into a potentiometer circuit. In the classic EMF-comparison experiment the balancing lengths l1 and l2 for two cells on the potentiometer wire give E1/E2 = l1/l2.
