Which burner for which laboratory task

A Bunsen burner is the standard heat source for school chemistry and biology practicals: heating test tubes and beakers on a tripod and gauze, warming solutions and sterilising wire loops. Models with a stopcock, needle valve or pilot flame give finer control or quick relighting when the burner is used on and off during a lesson.

Tirrill, Teclu and Meker burners give hotter flames. The Teclu burner is listed for glasswork and soldering, the Meker burner reaches up to 1750 degrees C, and the high-temperature natural gas burner is listed for jobs such as heating platinum wire. The flame spreader produces a wide fishtail flame for bending glass tubing.

Where a laboratory has no gas supply, the electric burner, the wickless alcohol burner, the alcohol lamp and the dry block heater provide heat without a gas line.

The standard Bunsen Burners (EL-B-10667) stand 125 mm high, with a nickel-plated burner tube of 100 x 12 mm, an adjustable screwed air regulator, a riffled connector and an 80 mm stove-enamelled pressed steel base. The Electric Burner (EL-B-10653) is rated at 500 W, heats a 130 mm area from 37 to 920 degrees C, measures 310 x 200 x 110 mm and weighs 1.7 kg.

How do Bunsen, Tirrill and Meker burners differ?

A Bunsen burner mixes gas and air in a plain tube with an air regulator at the base. The Tirrill burner adds a needle valve for gas with separately adjustable air ports and is listed up to 1550 degrees C. A Meker burner has a perforated grid on top that spreads the flame into many small cones and is listed up to 1750 degrees C.

Which burner works with LP gas?

The Bunsen Burner with Flame Stabilizer (EL-B-10677) is listed for both natural gas and LP gas, on a 6 inch square base that resists tipping.

How are burners lit safely?

The piezo electric gas lighter produces 6 to 8 sparks at 20 kV per use without batteries or fuel, and the butane lighter has a safety switch against accidental use.
