Electrolysis of water with the Hofmann voltameter

The Hofmann voltameter is the standard apparatus for the electrolysis of water. Acidified water is poured in through the funnel on the central tube, a direct current is passed between the electrodes, and hydrogen and oxygen collect separately in the two graduated side tubes. Students read the two volumes against the 0 to 50 mL scale and find that the volume of hydrogen is about twice that of oxygen; the stopcock jets then let each gas be released and tested. The student gas voltameter does the same experiment on a smaller scale with its own platinum electrodes and two miniature test tubes.

Cells, electrodes and other experiments

The Daniell cell shows how a zinc and a copper half-cell, separated by a porous pot, produce a voltage of about 1.1 V. With the simple cell kit, students pair different metals in turn and compare the voltages to build up a reactivity series, and the salt bridge connects two separate half-cells in a beaker set-up. The fruit clock uses lemon juice as the electrolyte. For electrolysis of solutions at the bench, students use the electrolysis cells, the universal electrode holder with its carbon electrodes, or the S-shape electrodes that hang over the rim of a beaker.

Specification examples

The Hofmann Voltameter (EL-E-10975) has three parallel glass tubes joined by a horizontal tube. The two side tubes are graduated 0 to 50 mL in 0.2 mL divisions and end in jets with stopcocks, the central tube has a filling funnel, and bungs are fitted for the electrodes. Clamps and a support base are recommended and sold separately.

The Daniell Cell (EL-E-10985) has a heavy-gauge copper outer vessel as the positive electrode and a zinc amalgam rod on a wooden cap as the negative electrode, with a porous pot and a perforated shelf for copper sulphate crystals. Both electrodes have 4 mm sockets, and the cell gives about 1.1 volts.
