Heat transfer experiments

Conduction experiments find the thermal conductivity of a copper rod from its temperature gradient, the overall resistance of a wall made of three different plates, and the conductivity of the insulation in a lagged pipe. The critical radius apparatus shows how insulation thickness on a heated pipe changes heat loss, and the heat pipe apparatus compares the temperature profile of a heat pipe with solid copper and stainless steel pipes of the same size.

Convection experiments cover the temperature distribution and efficiency of pin fins, the natural convection coefficient of a heated pipe in an enclosure, the forced convection coefficient for air flowing through a heated pipe, the specific heat of air, and the heat transfer coefficient of a helical coil in an agitated vessel. Radiation work measures the emissivity of a test plate against a black plate and the Stefan-Boltzmann constant, the critical heat flux apparatus shows boiling on an electrically heated wire, and the three exchangers are used to find heat transfer rates and effectiveness.

Radiation and heat exchanger specifications

The Stefan-Boltzmann Apparatus (EL-HTL-11089) heats a 200 mm copper hemisphere inside a 250 mm water jacket fed from a tank with an immersion heater; the 20 mm copper test disc has a thermocouple at its centre, the digital indicator reads to 0.1 C, and a buzzer sounds every 5 seconds for timed readings. The Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger (EL-HTL-11092) has a 750 mm shell with end boxes and a divider plate, copper tubes of 6.35 mm OD on a triangular pitch and an instantaneous 3 kW water heater, and needs about 10 litres of water per minute.

Which heat exchangers are available?

Three: a concentric tube exchanger with a copper inner tube and GI outer pipe, a water-to-water shell and tube exchanger with four baffles, and a plate exchanger with stainless steel plates of 200 x 400 mm. Hot water comes from a 3 kW geyser or heater on each.

Which apparatus cover thermal radiation?

The emissivity apparatus heats a test plate and a black plate, each 160 mm in diameter, with separate dimmers in a Perspex-fronted panel, and the Stefan-Boltzmann apparatus measures the radiation constant with a copper hemisphere and test disc.

How are temperatures measured?

Most units use thermocouples with a multichannel digital temperature indicator, for example 8 along the metal rod and 7 along the natural convection pipe. The heat exchangers use thermometers for inlet and outlet water, with a digital indicator offered as an option on the plate type.
