What bossheads do on a retort stand
A bosshead joins a clamp, ring or second rod to the upright rod of a retort stand. Tightening its screws locks the joint, so a flask, burette or condenser can be held at the right height over a burner or heating mantle during distillation, titration or heating experiments.
Standard and cross-type bossheads hold rods at 90 or 180 degrees. Swivel types let two rods meet at any angle, frame bossheads build fixed support lattices, and the three-angle bosshead gives extra connection points on larger rigs.
