Where dissecting instruments are used

In biology practicals, a specimen is laid in a dissecting tray or dish with a wax bottom, or on a soft wood board, and held open with dissecting pins while students work with scissors, forceps, needles and a seeker. Botany practicals use the same kit differently: the razor cuts thin transverse sections of stems and roots, the section lifter moves each section to a slide or watch glass, and the magnifier helps to check the cut. Disposable plastic forceps and scalpel handles are available for classes that prefer single-use tools.

The surgical items, which include retractors, towel clips, specula, a sharp and blunt uterine curette, a dental scaler and a skin grafting handle, are used to teach instrument names and handling in nursing and medical training.
