Ohm Meter Shunt Type
Product Code : SCL-EAE-11338
Quick answer: The Ohm Meter Shunt Type is an educational resistance meter in which the unknown resistor is connected in parallel with the meter movement. It is used to measure low resistances and to demonstrate the shunt-ohmmeter principle, current division and zero adjustment in physics and electrical practicals. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the shunt ohmmeter works
In a shunt-type ohmmeter the unknown resistance Rx is connected across, that is in parallel with, the meter movement rather than in series with it. With the test terminals open, the full current from the internal source passes through the meter and the pointer is set to full scale, which represents infinite resistance. When Rx is connected it takes part of that current, so the meter current and deflection fall; a short circuit (Rx = 0) diverts almost all the current and gives zero deflection.
The scale therefore reads zero ohm on the left and rises to the right, the opposite of a series ohmmeter, and it is most useful for low resistances, where a series instrument crowds its readings together. Students see current division in a parallel circuit at work inside a real measuring instrument.
- Check that the circuit to be tested is not energised and inspect the test leads.
- With the test terminals open, set the reference (full-scale) adjustment.
- Connect the unknown resistor across the test terminals.
- Read the resistance on the scale and compare it with the stated value of the resistor.
Key features
- Shows how an unknown resistance in a parallel branch changes the meter current
- Resistance-calibrated scale for direct readings
- Suited to measuring low resistance values
- Reference or zero adjustment is practised before each measurement
- Reusable training instrument, so the meter circuit need not be built each time

Frequently asked questions
How does a shunt type ohmmeter differ from a series type?
In the shunt type the unknown resistor is connected in parallel with the meter, so zero ohm gives no deflection and the instrument suits low resistances; in the series type the resistor is in series and zero ohm gives full-scale deflection.
What experiments is the shunt ohmmeter used for?
Demonstrating the shunt-ohmmeter principle, measuring low resistances, studying current division in a parallel circuit and practising resistance-scale reading.
