How it is used
Preparing a good slide takes time: the specimen must be fixed, sectioned or spread thinly, stained and sealed under a cover slip. Prepared slides take that step out of the practical, so the class can spend the lesson observing, drawing and comparing. They also give every student the same specimen, which makes it easier to compare observations and to link real structures with textbook diagrams.
- Hold the slide by its edges and place it on the stage with the label to one side.
- Start with the low-power objective and bring the specimen into focus with the coarse focus.
- Centre the area of interest, switch to a higher-power objective and sharpen the image with the fine focus.
- Draw and label what is seen, then return the slide flat to its box.
Handled by the edges and stored flat in a dry, dust-free slide box, prepared slides can be used again with later classes. Chipped or cracked slides should be taken out of use.
