Heating Mantle

Heating Mantle

Product Code : EL-HM-10683

Quick answer: A heating mantle is an electric heater that wraps a flask in a flexible element, used for boiling, refluxing and distilling liquids without an open flame. This model has a rolled aluminium body, heats up to 350 °C under an energy regulator and is offered for flasks of 50 ml to 5000 ml. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for teaching and research laboratories.

How the heating mantle is used

The mantle is sized to the flask it heats: the cavity follows the curve of a round bottom flask of the stated capacity, so the glass-fabric element touches most of the lower surface. Heat is spread evenly, bumping is reduced and there is no open flame, which makes the mantle a standard heat source for distillation and reflux set-ups.

The energy regulator works by switching the element on and off in a repeating cycle; a higher setting keeps the element on for a larger share of each cycle. It sets the heat input rather than reading the liquid temperature, so a thermometer in the flask is used to follow the process.

  1. Choose the mantle that matches the flask capacity so the glass sits fully in the cavity.
  2. Clamp the flask neck to a retort stand and fit the condenser or still head.
  3. Start at a low regulator setting and raise it gradually until the liquid boils steadily.
  4. Watch the thermometer and reduce the setting if boiling becomes too vigorous.
  5. Turn the regulator to zero and let the mantle cool before removing the flask.

Frequently asked questions

What flask sizes does the heating mantle take?

It is offered for 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 and 5000 ml flasks. Choose the size that matches the flask so the glass sits fully in the cavity.

How is the temperature of the heating mantle controlled?

An energy regulator sets the heat input, and the mantle can reach up to 350 °C. A thermometer in the flask shows the actual liquid temperature.

What is the heating mantle made of?

The outer body is rolled aluminium, and the flexible, insulated heating element is anchored in glass fabric that lines the cavity.
