How the model is used in teaching
Hearing depends on a chain of small structures that are hard to see in any real specimen. Enlarged about four to five times, this model makes the path of sound easy to follow: sound waves travel along the ear canal to the tympanic membrane (eardrum), which vibrates and passes the movement to the malleus, then the incus, and on to the stapes and the inner ear.
The removable eardrum, with the malleus and incus attached, lets the teacher lift out the first links of that chain and show how they connect. The removable section of the petrous part of the temporal bone shows how the auditory canal runs through the dense bone at the side of the skull.

- Remove the eardrum with the malleus and incus to show how the ossicles connect.
- Lift out the temporal bone section and discuss the bone that houses the hearing organs.
- Refit each part in turn, checking names on the numbered key card.
