How the brass slotted mass set is used
Slotted masses have a slot cut from the edge to the centre, so each one slides onto the hanger stem without lifting off the pieces below. Because this set mixes 20 g, 10 g and 5 g pieces, a load can be trimmed finely: 135 g, for example, is the 50 g hanger, four 20 g masses and one 5 g mass. That fine control helps when balancing a metre rule to find an unknown mass by moments.
